Summary |
"He must be a miserable miller
who never likes to wander..."
Following their moving performance of Schwanengesang in 2016, Daniel Carison and Geoffrey Urquhart return to St Stephen's Richmond in 2017 as with Die Schöne Müllerin they complete their journey through the major song cycles of Franz Schubert.
Die Schöne Müllerin (The Beautiful Miller Girl) details the tragic experiences of a young itinerant mill worker in the Germany of the 1820s: although initially happy, his naïvety, simplicity, and passion prove to be his undoing when he must confront realities of love and life for which he is ill-prepared.
Rich with symbolism and poetic imagery, Die Schöne Müllerin proved to be the first truly great German song cycle. A setting of poems by the author of Winterreise, Wilhelm Müller (1794-1827), it contains not only a glorious and deeply moving role for the singer but also a piano accompaniment which rises to equal partnership with the sung narrative; resounding with burbling brooks, grinding mill wheels, lute, fife, and a fateful hunter's horn, the piano provides an an unspoken answer to the miller's joys and sorrows throughout the work.
Prior to the performance the audience will be treated to an expository talk, exploring the cycle and sharing insight into its extraordinary narrative. The performance will be followed by a light supper.
Tickets (available at the door): $25 (conc. $15) |
